Speed is the most famous of English map-maker and author of one of the most important atlas's of the seventeenth century. Speed's maps were published in various editions, this map has the date 1610 engraved on the face of the map, the date when the map was first engraved, and the name of the publishers who produced the 1676 edition. The other way to tell editions apart is the engraved capital used by the different printers in the text describing each island on the back of the map (see detail of the text describing Jersey). Copper engraved map with later hand colour, centrefold as issued, good margins, printer's crease in bottom left corner 3 cms into engraved area, bottom margin browned not affecting engraved area. |
