"Holy Island, Garnsey, Farne, Jarsey" by John Speed, engraved by Hondius and published by Bassett and Chiswell in 1676.The map is in four sections (it was scanned in 4 sections so there is some unintentional blurring along the decorative border)Holy Island and Farne(Lindisfarne) are off the coast of Northumbria while Jarsey and Garnsey are in the English Channel. Speed is the most famous of English map-maker and author of one of the most important atlas's of the seventeenth century. Speed's maps were published in various editions, this map has the date 1610 engraved on the face of the map, the date when the map was first engraved, and the name of the publishers who produced the 1676 edition. The other way to tell editions apart is the engraved capital used by the different printers in the text describing each island on the back of the map (see detail of the text describing Jersey). Copper engraved map with later hand colour, centrefold as issued, good margins, printer's crease in bottom left corner 3 cms into engraved area, bottom margin browned not affecting engraved area.

Isle of Man

 

 

"The Isle of Man" by John Speed after the earlier survey by Thomas Durham of 1595, published by Bassett and Chiswell between 1676 and 1680. The maps were engraved in Amsterdam by Jocodus Hondius who had previously been resident in England. There is text describing the history of the Kings and the Island on the verso of the map. The text was reset for each edition and the wood initial used by different printers is used to identify the different editions, see text. Copper engraved map with later hand colour, folded as issued, couple of closed tears and nicks to margins, not affecting engraved area, paper browned. Size 38x50.5cms/15"x20". Ref.WM162 Price £575

  "A New Map of the Isle of Man, Drawn from the best Authorities by Tho.s Kitchin" published in 1764. Thomas Kitichin was an engraver and publisher, producing maps, town plans and charts between 1747 and his death in 1784.   "Jersey or Caesarea" by Robert Morden published by Awnsham in 1722 in Camden's Britannia. William Camden (1551-1623) was a historian and antiquary whose works were reprinted and published over a period of 200 years. The original latin text was first translated by Gibson in 1695. The map comes with 7 pages of text on 'The British Islands on the Coast of France'. Copper engraved map with recent hand colour, margins cropped to engraved area on 3 sides, folded as issued.
