  "Herefordia Comitatus vernacule Herefordshire" by Jan Jansson, published in Amsterdam between 1646 and 1656. Jansson was a contemporary and rival to Bleau (see above). Jansson worked with, and then took over the engraving and publishing business of Hondius, that had been established by the great cartographer Gerhard Mercator in the 1570's. The elaborate calligraphy and cherubs are typical of Jansson's work. Copper engraved map with contemporary hand colour, folded as issued, paper browned at edges. Size 50x37.5cms/19.5"x14.75".    "A Map of Herefordshire" by Emanuel Bowen published by John Owen between 1720 and 1764. Bowen's maps were distinctive for the descriptive text engraved on the face of the map. This map describes the county as 'eminently famous for Cyder, especially Red Streak(which is much deemed all over the Land). Details of the road from Bristol to Westchester are contained in the elaborate cartouche at the top of the map. Copper engraved map with recent hand colour. Size 11.5x18cms/4.5"x7".   Road from Gloucester to Hereford by Emanuel Bowen after the earlier surveys of John Ogilby, published by John Owen in 1759, passing through Huntley, Lea, Ross, Peterstone, Harods End, Harwood, Mich Birch, Dew Church to Hereford. The map has the Arms of the Bishoprick of Hereford and the Deanary of Hereford, with descriptive text on Wilton and Ross. The verso has a map of Montgomeryshire by Bowen, with details of the road in an elaborate cartouche at the top of the map, see map.  Copper engraved map with recent hand colour.   "Herefordshire drawn from the best Authorities" drawn and engraved by Thomas Kitchin and published around 1764. Kitchin's maps were characterised by their attractive rococo style with decorative cartouches and coates of arms. Copper engraved map with later hand colour, closed tear in bottom margin, crudely repaired, not affecting engraved area. Size 21x17cms/8.25"x6.75". Ref.RM940 Price £38

   "Herefordshire" by John Ellis, engraved by William Palmer and published by Sayer and Bowles in 1766. The map is similar in style to those by Thomas Kitchin and has an attractive title vignette. Copper engraved map with recent hand colour. Size 19x25cms/7.5"x10". Ref.RM583 Price £48

   "Bowles's New Medium Map of Herefordshire, Divided into its Hundreds; exhibiting the roads, towns and villages; with their distance from London, Church Livings, Seats of the Nobility and Historical remarks" drawn and engraved by Emanuel and Thomas Bowen and published by Carrington Bowles in 1785. The map has a great deal of information engraved on the face of the map. Copper engraved map with contemporary outline colour, folded as issued, some staining to margins, not affecting engraved area.
